Pathways to Net Zero

This is a Virtual Course

Climate change and environmental degradation pose serious threats to human health. The primary issue addressed by this course is the significant environmental impact of the United States healthcare system, which contributes substantially to the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions.

This course is designed to foster a more sustainable healthcare system by educating and empowering those in key positions to make impactful changes, as well as those that are curious or committed to becoming more versed in these issues. This course aims to equip clinicians, administrators, and healthcare staff with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to improve their operations and work towards net zero emissions. By providing education on the environmental impact of healthcare and practical strategies for mitigation, the course empowers participants to implement sustainable practices in their healthcare work environment and through their respective roles.

Target audience

This activity is intended for health system leaders/administrators; clinicians interested in sustainability careers, including physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and pharmacists.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the contribution of healthcare in the U.S. to pollution and climate change and the importance of mitigation.
  2. Quantify the environmental impact of health care.
  3. Summarize steps for auditing and reporting emissions.
  4. Discuss non-clinical and clinical pathways to mitigate healthcare greenhouse gas emissions.
  5. Articulate ways in which participants can work towards net zero emissions.
