MGH-Mayo Penicillin Allergy Learning Module (PALM)

This immersive, skills‑focused course is designed to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and practical competencies needed to assess penicillin allergy safely and effectively. Participants will learn structured approaches to history‑based risk stratification, penicillin skin testing, drug challenges, and strategies to remove incorrect penicillin allergy labels (“de‑labeling”) across diverse clinical settings. 

Course Highlights

• Teaching from renowned experts from Mayo Clinic, Harvard, and Mass General Brigham.
• Hands‑on stations for penicillin skin testing and drug challenge workflows.
• Anaphylaxis simulation with feedback on clinical response and team communication.
• Roundtable discussions on integrating assessments into practice across settings and populations.
• Implementation strategies to scale de‑labeling and improve antimicrobial stewardship and patient safety.
• Additional focus on patient safety and allergy documentation.

Target audience

This activity is intended for Allergists, Infectious Diseases, Primary Care, Family Practice, Pharmacists, Hospitalists, Nurses, Infectious Disease Specialists, and APPs.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Demonstrate competence in comprehensive assessments on penicillin allergy.
• Identify the dangers of unverified penicillin allergy, including the negative consequences to patients and community.
• Differentiate patients with low and high risk penicillin allergy histories.
• Manage and diagnose allergic reactions as members of an interprofessional health care team.
• Review optimal methods of electronic health record allergy documentation.
• Develop evaluation strategies across patients and settings.

American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI)

This course can be used for ABAI MOC part II and IV credits and will be arranged by course directors with ABAI and AAAAI.  Part IV MOC will require a survey 30 days after the course.
